DCist Exposed Magazine: On Sale Now

The DCist Exposed magazine is now for sale! We needed a ton of help to get this project off the ground, so we want to take a minute and thank all of the wonderful people who supported us. Most importantly, we couldn't have done it -- and the magazine wouldn't look as completely awesome as it does -- without the graphic design work of Johanna Ostrich.

Yesterday I went to the Atlas Performing Arts Center to meet with Paul Douglas Michnewicz and Mary Hall Surface, two of the wonderful people running the huge INTERSECTIONS festival that starts later this month. We took a look at the nearly 70 photos entered into our contest to feature the festival theme in a photograph exhibit. After lots of debate we found 13 photos that captured an "intersection where arts and cultures meet."

We'll have two events specifically for the exhibit, during ARTventures on February 24 and the opening weekend of INTERSECTIONS on February 26. We'll bring you more information on both of those events soon.

Call for Entries: INTERSECTIONS Festival

Now that the DCist Exposed contest is closed (read DCist next Wednesday to find out if you've won!), let's move right along to our next project. This one moves quick, so please get your photos in ASAP!

INTERSECTIONS is a nine-day all-arts festival. A meeting place – onstage and off – for people who love music, theater, film, spoken word and dance. We have selected the best professional, emerging, community and student performers from DC and beyond. We are all ages, races and cultures. We celebrate connection, collaboration and innovation.

Ten Miles Square will host a photography show to run during the festival that celebrates INTERSECTIONS' goal of being a place were arts merge and cultures meet. This time, instead of "Ten Miles Square" where we focus on all of D.C., we're looking for photographers who can take on the ten square miles surrounding the Atlas neighborhood -- capturing connections, innovation, intersection of cultures, ages, races. We'll feature your work in a photography show as part of INTERSECTIONS, tying together the diversity and dynamism of the performers on stage with the vibrancy of the neighborhood outside the Atlas.

The winners work will be hung unframed in the Atlas Theater and available for sale; winners also receive one festival pass good for entry to every performance on a space available basis. Submit your work to heather@tenmilessquare.com before February 7 for consideration. Winners will be announced February 10th and must bring their unframed print to Atlas by the 17th.

You may submit up to 5 photos by either sending a link to a Flickr set or sending the photos in .zip file. Of course, your photos will never be used without your permission.

Celebrating Five Years of Exposed: A Special Anniversary Magazine

We know you're busy finding your best photos to enter into the 2011 DCist Exposed Photography Contest. But we want to take a moment to commemorate not just a new exciting year of Exposed, but that 2011 marks five awesome years of our little photography show. Since 2006, DCist Exposed has featured some of the best local photography out there, showcasing images of Washington, D.C.'s unique culture, produced by the people who live and work here. So DCist, in collaboration with Ten Miles Square, are publishing a special Fifth-Year Anniversary magazine.

The magazine will feature the winners from the last four years, along with the winners that we'll announce in January (even more incentive to enter!). The issue will be ready in time for 2011 Exposed opening night, and will be available for purchase both in person and online for $25 (or less -- we'll know better once we nail down exactly how many pages it will be), along with a free iPad version. We're going to need a little help funding and gauging interest in this fairly massive project that will involve over 100 photographers -- nearly all of whom have been featured regularly on this here website of ours.

We've decided to put our faith in Kickstarter, an online fundraising platform for art projects. At our project page, donors can pledge a certain amount – as little as $1 – and if the pledges fully fund our project by our deadline, January 23, huzzah! If we cannot raise that amount, we get nothing; an interesting all-or-nothing bet on how worthy our project is. We think publishing a definitive collection of real D.C. photography is indeed worthy, so we're offering all kinds of rewards for your donation, too. If you pledge $25 or more, you'll get a free copy of the magazine sent to your door -- there are other rewards as you go up the donor scale, such as an 8x10 print of a winning Exposed photo, credit in the magazine and more.

We hope, like us, you'll find this compilation of Washington, D.C. photography a worthy project, and are already dusting off the coffee table for your pre-ordered copy. Your donation will help us create and design the magazine, and let us reward the fantastic local photographers whose work we're featuring in the collection.

Congrats to the DC State Fair winners!

We gathered on the field at Harriet Tubman Elementary School to enjoy the DC State Fair, Columbia Heights Day, and to announce the winners of the Ten Miles Square photo contest. Congrats to Winna Bridgewater, our Grand Prize Winner! Runner-up was Pat Padua, followed by second runner-up, Jim Darling. They each took home their framed winning photograph.

Thanks to everybody for participating, and to the DC State Fair for providing ribbons and small cash prizes for the winners. We hope to do it again next year!

Ten Miles Square is pleased to sponsor the DC State Fair photo contest!

Mark Saturday, August 28 on your calendar to check out the first DC State Fair, part of Columbia Heights Day on the field at Harriet Tubman Elementary School.

"DC has no county fair or state fair where DC residents can show off their talents in things like baking, canning, urban agriculture, photography, etc. But this year, we're planning to change that. A group of bloggers is partnering with Columbia Heights Day to create a DC State Fair tent, where there will be competitions such as Tastiest Tomato, Best Home-Made Pie, a neighborhood photo contest, and so forth. DC residents will submit their entries for a chance to win glory and prizes. The DC State Fair will be held on August 28th, concurrent with Columbia Heights Day, at Tubman Elementary Field (11th and Irving Streets NW)."

And what's a state fair without an awesome photo contest? Show us your photos of supreme DC spirit: display our cultural independence in images! Enter your two best images to our Flickr pool by midnight on Sunday, August 22.

Heather Goss from Ten Miles Square and DCist, along with special guest judges and DC Spirit Experts, Philippa Hughes from the Pink Line Project and Dan Silverman from the Prince of Petworth, will pick a handful of favorites for semi-finalists, which will be displayed online the week before the fair. Our Grand Prize Winner, First and Second Runners-Up will be printed, framed, and displayed at the DC State Fair on August 28. Winners will get to take their framed prints home, to show off their DC pride to friends and family, in addition to ribbons and small cash prizes.

Entrants must live in the District of Columbia. (Virginia, Maryland, we love you, but you have your own fairs to enter!) Entry is free, limit two photos per person. Questions, please email Heather at heather@tenmilessquare.com.

There is no fee to enter the DC State Fair. However, donations to the organizers are greatly appreciated! Recommended donation is $5 per entry (but judging will be blind, and donation status will not affect results). Please visit the DC State Fair website and click the Paypal link to donate.

2010 DCist Exposed Photography Show opens Saturday, March 6

DCist.com is pleased to announce its fourth annual DCist Exposed Photography Show, at Long View Gallery, running March 6 to 21, 2010. Out of over 1,000 individual entries submitted through Flickr.com, 47 winning images were selected by a panel of judges to be included in this year's DCist Exposed exhibit. DCist.com prides itself on engaging and promoting emerging local photographers through its daily use of images from the popular, reader-generated DCist Flickr photo pool. Each day, DCist.com selects photos from the pool for use in its daily coverage of local news, arts and entertainment, food and sports.

This year's opening reception will be bigger and better than ever, to be held Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 6 to 10 p.m. At the bar, mixologist Scott Palmer from Dino will have a special punch, Leopold Brothers will host a liquor tasting, Downey Selections has some wine for us, and Pabst Blue Ribbon will hold down the fort with plenty of beer. Nage will provide hor'dourves, while DJs v:shal kanwar, Sequoia and Mr Darko spin tunes. Reception is $5 per guest at the door.

Long View Gallery is located at 1234 9th St. NW, just a few blocks from the Mt. Vernon/Convention Center Metro. The 2009 DCist Exposed event welcomed over 1,000 people on opening night, and with this even larger venue, we expect our biggest crowd ever. All photographs selected and displayed at DCist Exposed will be for sale at prices well below traditional gallery shows. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 12 to 5 p.m.

DCist is also bringing back the popular special event for emerging collectors, Emerge Exposed, on Tuesday, March 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. Co-hosted by DCist and the Pink Line Project, a panel of experts -- George Hemphill, Leena Jayaswal, and Max Hirshfeld -- along with moderator Philippa Hughes, will share tips and ideas on how to begin collecting art. Thank you for coming out to Fixation!

Pardon my terrible cameraphone photo, but you can see above the very nice crowd that came out for the Fixation opening. Just about 600 folks (and two very nice policemen) came to enjoy the artwork by our nine photographers and drink a few beers with us.
