Thanks to everyone who entered the Ten Miles Square sponsored DC State Fair photo contest! As you can see in the Flickr pool, there were some amazing entries. I, along with our two fantastic judges, Philippa Hughes and Dan Silverman, finally narrowed it down to these 12 semi-finalists, in no order. Join us at the DC State Fair this Saturday, August 28, to see the three winners! (Remember winners will have their photos framed to take home, along with ribbons and a small cash prize, woo!)

Ten Miles Square is pleased to sponsor the DC State Fair photo contest!

Mark Saturday, August 28 on your calendar to check out the first DC State Fair, part of Columbia Heights Day on the field at Harriet Tubman Elementary School.

"DC has no county fair or state fair where DC residents can show off their talents in things like baking, canning, urban agriculture, photography, etc. But this year, we're planning to change that. A group of bloggers is partnering with Columbia Heights Day to create a DC State Fair tent, where there will be competitions such as Tastiest Tomato, Best Home-Made Pie, a neighborhood photo contest, and so forth. DC residents will submit their entries for a chance to win glory and prizes. The DC State Fair will be held on August 28th, concurrent with Columbia Heights Day, at Tubman Elementary Field (11th and Irving Streets NW)."

And what's a state fair without an awesome photo contest? Show us your photos of supreme DC spirit: display our cultural independence in images! Enter your two best images to our Flickr pool by midnight on Sunday, August 22.

Heather Goss from Ten Miles Square and DCist, along with special guest judges and DC Spirit Experts, Philippa Hughes from the Pink Line Project and Dan Silverman from the Prince of Petworth, will pick a handful of favorites for semi-finalists, which will be displayed online the week before the fair. Our Grand Prize Winner, First and Second Runners-Up will be printed, framed, and displayed at the DC State Fair on August 28. Winners will get to take their framed prints home, to show off their DC pride to friends and family, in addition to ribbons and small cash prizes.

Entrants must live in the District of Columbia. (Virginia, Maryland, we love you, but you have your own fairs to enter!) Entry is free, limit two photos per person. Questions, please email Heather at heather@tenmilessquare.com.

There is no fee to enter the DC State Fair. However, donations to the organizers are greatly appreciated! Recommended donation is $5 per entry (but judging will be blind, and donation status will not affect results). Please visit the DC State Fair website and click the Paypal link to donate.

2010 DCist Exposed Photography Show opens Saturday, March 6

DCist.com is pleased to announce its fourth annual DCist Exposed Photography Show, at Long View Gallery, running March 6 to 21, 2010. Out of over 1,000 individual entries submitted through Flickr.com, 47 winning images were selected by a panel of judges to be included in this year's DCist Exposed exhibit. DCist.com prides itself on engaging and promoting emerging local photographers through its daily use of images from the popular, reader-generated DCist Flickr photo pool. Each day, DCist.com selects photos from the pool for use in its daily coverage of local news, arts and entertainment, food and sports.

This year's opening reception will be bigger and better than ever, to be held Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 6 to 10 p.m. At the bar, mixologist Scott Palmer from Dino will have a special punch, Leopold Brothers will host a liquor tasting, Downey Selections has some wine for us, and Pabst Blue Ribbon will hold down the fort with plenty of beer. Nage will provide hor'dourves, while DJs v:shal kanwar, Sequoia and Mr Darko spin tunes. Reception is $5 per guest at the door.

Long View Gallery is located at 1234 9th St. NW, just a few blocks from the Mt. Vernon/Convention Center Metro. The 2009 DCist Exposed event welcomed over 1,000 people on opening night, and with this even larger venue, we expect our biggest crowd ever. All photographs selected and displayed at DCist Exposed will be for sale at prices well below traditional gallery shows. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 12 to 5 p.m.

DCist is also bringing back the popular special event for emerging collectors, Emerge Exposed, on Tuesday, March 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. Co-hosted by DCist and the Pink Line Project, a panel of experts -- George Hemphill, Leena Jayaswal, and Max Hirshfeld -- along with moderator Philippa Hughes, will share tips and ideas on how to begin collecting art. The Emerge Exposed event is $8 in advance, $10 at the door. RSVP to rsvp@pinklineproject.com.

Pardon my terrible cameraphone photo, but you can see above the very nice crowd that came out for the Fixation opening. Just about 600 folks (and two very nice policemen) came to enjoy the artwork by our nine photographers and drink a few beers with us.

The show only runs until next Saturday. See it at 1358 Florida Avenue NE, Wednesday through Saturday, 12 to 5 p.m., or contact heather[at]tenmilessquare.com to make an appointment. If you'd like to purchase one of the pieces before the week is out just send me an email and we'll make it happen.

Fixation at Industry Gallery, November 7

Join Ten Miles Square and the Pink Line Project at Industry Gallery with the work of nine local photographers for the second annual Fixation exhibit, part of the FotoweekDC festival.

These photographers each create a narrative with a short series of images, differentiating the stereotypical image of our Nation's Capital from the people actually living inside it. Their photographs inspect our city's individual subcultures and the people who thrive in them, whether it's the intense rock convulsions of serious air guitar competitors or the eager characters at the local Renaissance festival. Some create their own scenes by simply coming together as bystanders, while others transit separately in search of the same something. What these images all have in common is a fixation on subculture carved out inside the story of this city.

Featured photographers: Nicole Aguirre, Karon Flage, Angela Kleis, Drew McDermott, Amit Mehta, Pat Padua, Jay Westcott, Aziz Yazdani, and Joshua Yospyn.

Ten Miles Square at the Street Sense Auction

Street Sense, D.C.'s only homeless newspaper, is having their major fundraiser of the year on Thursday night, which is a silent auction featuring tons of great stuff to bid on, including a photograph from Ten Miles Square. Michael Galkovsky's fantastic image (8x10 in a 16x20 frame) of lightning over the city will be up for auction, so come on out and put up a little dough to help Street Sense continue their mission.

Microscopy at Hounshell this Saturday

Join Ten Miles Square and the work of Pat Padua and Jennifer Wade in Microscopy at Hounshell (1506 14th Street NW) this Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Padua and Wade take a closer look, literally and figuratively, at the minutiae of life. Padua's photographs feature the quirky side of Americana that constantly seesaws between the oddly humorous and vaguely depressing -- images like a shiny, bright red gumball machine encouraging us to enjoy hugs (and not drugs!), left to rot full of decaying, colorless candies, or a wide-shot of a packed bingo hall parking lot on a gorgeous day. Padua takes his microscope to a modern society that seems to have little interest in (or perhaps knowledge of) any world that exists outside the frame. Heavily influenced by Martin Parr, these images also document our strange relationships with consumerism and collectibles -- Jesus and Mary figurines suffocate silently in plastic wrap waiting for the true believer to save them.

Jennifer Wade takes a more literal approach to her Microscopy. A scientist by trade, she uses a scanning electron microscope to turn every day items into the soaring patterns of mountains and sheer cliffs of a cracked ring, swirls of atoms on chunk of coral, or the rushing current of fibers on a cut piece of paper. Much like Padua's photos, they remind the viewer that it's possible to both lean closer and step way back, and encourage the viewers to find their own perspectives.

Hounshell is at 1506 14th Street. Head down Saturday night to also enjoy openings at Irvine Contemporary, Hemphill, Gallery Plan B, the Hamiltonian Gallery. Many thanks to the Pink Line Project for helping make Microscopy possible.
